Srinagar, Sept 24: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister (CM) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti Wednesday said reducing the struggle of Jammu and Kashmir by CM Omar Abdullah to the issue of Statehood alone, was not only misleading but also deliberate attempt to diminish a complex reality.
In a post on her X, Mehbooba Mufti wrote: "While violence of any kind is absolutely condemnable, let us be clear. To reduce the struggles of Jammu and Kashmir to the issue of statehood alone, as @OmarAbdullah does, is not only misleading but also a deliberate attempt to diminish a much deeper and more complex reality."
The post further reads that the core concerns whether in Jammu and Kashmir or in Ladakh have always centered around dignity, rights, and the protection of land, jobs, and resources, including the demand for special status.
"Even in Ladakh today, people are openly expressing their discontent, driven by a fear of losing control over their land, livelihoods, and identity," the post reads.
Mehbooba Mufti said that by framing this struggle solely as a question of statehood CM Omar Abdullah not only ignores these broader aspirations but also ends up "reinforcing the BJP’s narrative."
Earlier in a separate tweet, Mehbooba Mufti while referring to clashes that erupted in Ladakh said that it was time the Government of India undertakes a "sincere and thorough appraisal of what has truly changed since 2019."
"This video isn’t from the Kashmir Valley considered the epicentre of unrest but from the heart of Ladakh, where angry protesters have set police vehicles and a BJP office on fire," her post on X reads.
Mehbooba Mufti said that Leh, a region long known for its peaceful and measured protests, is now witnessing a disturbing shift toward violent demonstrations.
"People seem to have lost patience , feel betrayed, insecure, and let down by unfulfilled promises," the post reads.
She said that it was imperative that the Government move beyond day to day crisis management and address the root causes of this "discontent urgently and transparently."
